Petalo RIBAJ Competition
The ambition behind ‘Petalo’ is to provide a ‘flat pack’ structure that can be lightweight and easily transported enabling its assembly in a number of hours to a full structure to assist in providing both temporary and permanent shelter depending on the users/facilities needs following the Covid-19 pandemic. Its assembly can be achieved with a few simple steps:
1. The translucent or opaque panels will have rods attached to them that can be slotted together to ‘open’ the panels to their fixed position;
2. These are then placed on four identical steel rods that form the skeleton of the structure;
3. The rods can then be fixed to the ground via drilled holes in the soil or within pre-made bases that they can be fixed into.
Assembled as individual modules that meet the required 2-metre physical distancing requirements, these can then be fitted together to create larger structures forming the required size depending on the use/requirements.
With future adaptability in mind ‘Petalo’ also has the ability:
-
To be fitted with solar cells/panels on its roof pieces transforming it into a self-sustained structure that can provide energy for small appliances;
-
Provide an opening in the centre of its panel assembly allowing for a container to be fitted for rainwater collection that can be filtered for emergency use.
And can be used for a variety of uses, including:
-
Medical, where a membrane/fabric can be fitted at the perimeter of the 2.2m singular unit to provide extra protection against disease transmission;
-
Restaurant, where the units can be placed outdoors for a secure dining experience;
-
Learning, where a number of units can be assembled together keeping students at a safe distance from each other with the adaptability to fit desk worktops onto the structural poles themselves.
And when in full bloom ‘Petalo’ will have the ability to make any situation better with its beauty, flexibility and resilience.
