Project 2100 Dezeen Mini Living Competition
The future of the home will require to be compact, flexible and movable. Focusing on the key aspiration of ‘big life, small footprint’, this project proposed spatial flexibility customised to its user’s needs. Aimed to provide and promote zero-waste and a cradle-to-cradle ethos, our proposal arises from the need to accommodate for every possible scenario that the human will face leading up to and after the 100 years.
Fast-forwarding to 100 years time, based in the city of Birmingham, UK, resources are low, production is slow, the city has reached its maximum density and material prices have skyrocketed leaving the city and the country in a state of scarcity. Birmingham, known to have more miles of canal than Venice, is already 1 metre underwater, its' residents are in desperate need of a smart/adaptable home to save them from extinction.

With the use of recycled metal from old cars and parts, people are offered a basic metal frame to adapt, clad and place however they desire based on their current and future needs. Due to the scarcity of materials and available resources, future humans are urged to use re-use old door frames, windows, plastic containers, and whatever they can obtain to finish their home.
The basic frame, the ‘pod’, will have the ability to be adapted to a single-person accommodation, family accommodation, bathroom-only pod, community/kitchen/living pod, growing vegetation pod, adapted to whatever the need of the user(s) to meet the unpredictable circumstances the 100-year human will face.
Providing this flexibility and with a robust frame, these pods will have the ability to be mounted/bolted onto existing structures, fitted with wheels to be a mobile home, or attach floating containers to enable the user to move their home as required whatever the current circumstance.
